903 Christopher becomes the fifteenth anti-pope by revolution,
and imprisons Leo V who was seen as an outsider by
local clergy.
909 Cluny Abbey founded: influencial for Church reform in France
1044-1046: Papal schism
1054: schism of Eastern and Western churches
Characteristics: Period was characterized by constant German interference
in Italian and papal affairs. Popes were generally weak, puppets
of Italian or German overlords. Growth of Cluny reform developed
strong leadership for church.
963 Leo VIII: 131st bishop of Rome. Otto "elected" him.
963 Mount Athos monestary founded in Greece
964 John XII forms a revolt at Tivoli, manages to regain papacy for short time.
964 Benedict V: 132nd bishop of Rome. The Romans supported him.
964 Leo VIII is reinstated by force by Otto.
988 Vladimir founds the Russian Orthodox Church
