Herod the Great has the first large harbor constructed in the
open sea built to support his new town of Caesarea Palestinae
(near present-day Haifa); the harbor is constructed of giant blocks
of concrete poured into wooden forms.
50 to 59 AD
Pliny the Elder (Gaius Plinius Secundrus) b Novum Comum (Como,
Italy) 23 AD, writes "Naturalis historia" (History of
nature), a work of 37 volumes summarizing all that is known in
his time about astronomy, geography, and zoology; taken entirely
from secondary sources, many legendary monsters are treated as
real.
60 to 69AD
The Alexandrian Greek Hero (also known as Heron, b about 20 AD)
builds a toy that is powered by steam, using jets of steam to
turn a kettle; there is apparently no idea of putting it to practical
use.
70 to 79 AD
Pliny the Elder d 79 of asphyxiation while observing an eruption
of Mount Vesuvius in Italy.
