Different Drummer
"Sometimes I feel I have to, run away, I've got to get away. This tainted love you give..." (excerpt from 1970s Disco hit)
The Christians may not have been dancing at the disco, but many were moving to the beat of a different drummer. One of the lead beat kings was Benedict. He composed a rhythm for life that was steady and constant. The disciplined monastic followers never tired of the monotony of Benedict's beat. Perhaps referring to God's love as tainted may be a bit left field, but in times when life was hard and survival was in the face of every human, a steady beat and a God that loved you and that you loved in the face of hardship may have looked tainted. Monks did not see themselves as running away from God's love, but to it. The upside however is that nothing stays tainted in a monastic community, as it is always someone's job to polish something.
