600 Gregory the Great, Bishop of Rome (Pope 590-604; Treatise on Pastoral Rule. Gregory wanted to have one ruler in consultation with a group of elder priests. This was the beginning of the real development of the Papacy. He was also influential in missionary work and Gregorian Chant.
